Artist Focus: Brink Surf – functional and artistic surfboards
Donald Brink of Brink Surf makes functional art; surfboards you can hang on a wall (without your better half complaining). He would rather see them ridden though. However, it’s nice to have a range of boards in your “quiver“ and if one of them can be hung as art in a convenient location to grab on your way for surf then all the better.
Donald Brink, creator of Brink Surf is a big believer in simplicity and views his time in the shaping bay as an honour, he is there to improve your riding ability. If you have a new board that also looks great on the wall then that’s a phenomenal bonus.
“My philosophy in life, surfing, shaping and especially board design is to keep things simple”.
But the shapes that he creates are nothing short of a revolution compared to a lot of the mass market major surfboard designs you’ll regularly see on a beach. Here’s a selection of some of the designs that we love:
You probably don’t have to be a surfer to notice something particular about the boards aside from the design and colours, Brink Surf specialise in “Asymmetrical” board design. This means that the left and the right side of the board are not the same shape. This is because no-one surfs the same backside or frontside, so the board is designed to take account of this and give a truly responsive feeling when riding.
As Donald says: “I thrive on custom shapes as I think the details in the experience you are looking for are hugely important. To be known and understood before designing a unique tool for your time… In reality the act of surfing and shaping are really simple. Surfboards are important for surfing. The ocean will always be Queen. We are privileged to be able to play in the sea. Enjoy your water.”
