Winter discoveries await…
Hard to spell, but easy in almost every other way Ljubljana, is something of an unpolished gem. The vibrant Slovenian capital offers a strikingly simple base from which to partake in a host of winter activities. Within 35 minutes you can be skiing, climbing frozen waterfalls or night sledding. It’s only an hour and a half’s flight from the UK and you will be pleasantly surprised by the amazing value and friendly locals.
Skiing & Snowboarding 30 Minutes Away
A stone’s throw from Ljubljana, you will find Krvavec. It humbly boasts over 30 kilometres of ski runs between 1,450m to 1,971m above sea level. Krvavec is a ski resort for all levels of snow enthusiast. From our own experience, the superb conditions, ease of access and culinary options on the mountain make this a compelling option.
Being located so close to the capital makes for easy transfers or day strike missions from Ljubljana. With an adult’s day pass costing 33 Euros and a 6 day pass coming in at 154 Euros, this is unbelievably good value for European skiing and snowboarding.
Ice Climbing A Frozen Waterfall
One of the most exhilarating experiences for us was ice climbing. After a guided walk wearing snowshoes across a pristine snowfields we arrived at the soaring natural ice sculpture. Tooled up with crampons and ice axes we received a short tutorial and got to it. Whilst this may sound extreme, it’s not as hard as you’d expect to scale a frozen waterfall, and the exhilaration of using axes and steel spiked shoes to climb is like nothing else.
It was a 30 minute drive from the city centre and you can find out more using this link: Ice Climbing
Night Sledding Down Mountains
Night sledding is simply one of the most liberating experiences we’ve ever had. Starting with an early dinner and a fair share of wine, we trekked for around 40 minutes up mountain trails and were presented with our sleds.
Whats followed was wild, childlike joy speeding down kilometres of reasonably narrow mountain passes at full throttle. There were some minor accidents, but no major injuries. Well worth the potential danger.

A Night In Prison
We stayed at the extremely vibrant Hostel Celica.
It’s a former prison converted by artists into a 5 star hostel. It has a good range of rooms from private ones to dorms, and large communal areas. There are regular events and activities hosted there. It’s by no means the only option, but it worked well for us and was great value.
Eat, Drink and Party
Ljubljana boasts an enormous range of gastronomic experiences for you to choose from. From street markets to modern elegance you’ll find no end of excellent local bistros and lively eateries to satisfy your tastebuds.
One bar that kept us coming back was Aperitivo. A bar and restaurant that serves up some magical cocktails and food within the idyllic setting of their very own garden pavilion.
We also had a great night out at Jazz Club Gajo if you like sampling some smooth live music. You are spoilt for choice in this lively city so roam around and find the right spot.
If you’re looking for great coffee (we always are) then this guide from the Sprudge kept us caffeinated: Coffee shops
