Ready to push the reset button at an off grid cabin?  Escape to Out Of The Valley in Devon where they offer tranquillity in a superbly stylish cabin.  Tucked away in a peaceful valley, you can spot wildlife from your doorstep, take a dip in the river, or go on relaxing nature walks. A stunning location and distinctive design, this is a gem of a getaway.

Out Of The Valley is an inspirationally designed cabin, not surprising considering it was built by a trained boat builder. “I believe so strongly in the importance of ecologically sensitive buildings and furniture, it’s a fantastic feeling being able to deliver a project that is as efficient and green as it could possibly be.” says the owner, Rupert.

Out of the Valley owes its distinctive dark exterior to an ancient Japanese technique called shou sugi ban: the cedar cladding has been charred to make it as hardwearing as possible. Rupert also makes furniture in his own studio nearby, and throughout the impeccably fabricated cabin are lovely touches of detail.

It’s an open-plan, minimalist space with a snuggly king-size bed and shower room with compost loo at one end. The other end houses the living area with wood burner.  The whole shebang is designed with efficiency in mind and electricity is provided by solar panels on the roof – this is real off grid cabin luxury.

Big glass doors lead onto the veranda, with immense views of the natural surroundings. It’s normal to see herons and kingfishers gliding over the water, and even an otter bobbing on the surface if you’re lucky. To assist in ornithological pursuits you will find binoculars and wildlife books tucked neatly away inside the cabin.
You’ve got masses of space to yourself – the cabin is nestled at the bottom of a peaceful valley surrounded by hundreds of acres of National Trust woodland. You’ll also find handmade tree and river houses dotted around, waiting to be discovered. There’s fishing in the river, wild swimming for the warmer months and both Exeter and the North and South Devon coasts are easily accessible.

When we found this little gem it really captured our imagination and we had to share the wonder.  At £485 for a 3 night stay this is a bargain break in tranquility within an off grid cabin.
